Craig Breedlove with Spirit, 1964. One of the clues for dating photos is Craig's footwear: in 1963 he wore low-top rubber-soled shoes; in 1964 he wore a pair of boxing boots. (William A. Moore photo)

Two days later, on Oct. 15, 1964, Craig crashed after breaking through the 500 mph barrier (527 mph two-way average). These are the tracks he left through the salt slushas he careened off the end of the course, on his way to a near-drowning in a brine pond. (William A. Moore photo)

Bill Moore's sketches for Craig's next LSR car. Craig planned to use the vehicle to break the sound barrier, hence Moore's notation, "S of A II Mach I". The vehicle's official name would be Spirit of America, Sonic 1.

More Moore sketches. Note the rear cockpit position in the bottom sketch. This idea was discarded early
since it necessitated placing the driver above the J-79 engine, making the vehicle too high.

In November 1965, after setting his 601 mph land speed record, Craig Breedlove began organizing a project to go after Donald Campbell's water speed record. His plan was to built a jet boat called Aqua America and run for the record on Lake Mead. The project never got past the model stage. (William A. Moore photo)

Here's your's truly with Craig in March 2014, when I was out to LA to meet with him about my "Speed Duel" feature film screenplay, the story of his epic rivalry in the '60s with Art Arfons
