ART ARFONS / GREEN
SALT FLATS AUDIO (CLIP 2)
November 7, 1965. It's been five days since Craig
Breedlove reclaimed the LSR in his new jet car, Spirit of America-Sonic I. Now it's
Art Arfons' turn on the Salt with his Green
Monster. He has the whole week booked but he's not going to use
it. He's going for the record right now, on his very first run.
Here's some raw, unedited audio recorded by Sports Illustrated writer Jack
Olsen of Art and his crew prepping the Monster
for the run. You
can hear Art and his partner Ed Snyder talking around 1:14 of the
clip. Art: "Where the charges at?" Ed: "They're in, I think. All
you got to do is hook them plugs on." The plane circling overhead is
being flown by Don Francisco. Toward the end of the clip the Monster's J-79 jet engine is fired
up and Jack mutters, "Jesus Christ...."
