He has written about 16th-century East Asian history, 19th-century Korean-American relations, Olympic sprinting and land speed racing and a circus elephant named Topsy who was electrocuted in 1903. He lives in Kingston, Ontario.

ART ARFONS / GREEN MONSTER: BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS AUDIO (CLIP 2)


November 7, 1965. It's been five days since Craig Breedlove reclaimed the LSR in his new jet car, Spirit of America-Sonic I. Now it's Art Arfons' turn on the Salt with his Green Monster. He has the whole week booked but he's not going to use it. He's going for the record right now, on his very first run.

Here's some raw, unedited audio
recorded by Sports Illustrated writer Jack Olsen of Art and his crew prepping the Monster for the run. You can hear Art and his partner Ed Snyder talking around 1:14 of the clip. Art: "Where the charges at?"  Ed: "They're in, I think. All you got to do is hook them plugs on." The plane circling overhead is being flown by Don Francisco. Toward the end of the clip the Monster's J-79 jet engine is fired up and Jack mutters, "Jesus Christ...."
