Hawley is a writer of narrative nonfiction. His books are
highly eclectic. He has written about 16th-century East Asian history,
19th-century Korean-American relations, Olympic sprinting and land
speed racing and a circus elephant named Topsy who was electrocuted in
1903. He lives in Kingston, Ontario.

Scarcely a month after Craig Breedlove claimed his
speed record of 407 mph on August 5, 1963, the Beach Boys recorded a
hit single entitled "Spirit of America." It was included in their album
Little Deuce Coupe,
released on September 2, 1963.
